I left my home country, Nigeria, in 2010 for undergraduate study in Canada. Since then, I have completed a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Political Science and made Vancouver, British Columbia my home, at least for the foreseeable future.

Currently, I am a PhD student in Political Science at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. My academic research focuses on state sovereignty, its contemporary evolution and its implication for human rights, specifically in Africa. More recently, I have begun studying issues relating to identity politics, diversity and inclusion, and free speech in the era of social media as the new public square. I previously held a sessional teaching position at Langara College in Vancouver (see my Curriculum Vitae or  LinkedIn), and currently maintain a vibrant political and cultural commentary account on Instagram.

 

POLITICAL/PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

I lean Classical Liberal/Libertarian in my politics and try, as much as possible, to live in and evaluate society following these rules (credit to @ScienceFemme on Twitter):

 

  1. Every person is a sovereign individual and deserves to be treated with the respect, compassion, and dignity that this implies.

  2. Individuals should not be judged based on immutable characteristics.

  3. Individuals should not be judged based on the characteristics of any group to which they may happen to belong.

  4. Collections of individuals do not gain moral authority by virtue of being in a group.

  5. There exists an objective reality against which our experiences should be tested for truth content using reason and logic.

  6. Maximizing truth content is perhaps the most worthwhile endeavor.

  7. The scientific method is the most effective process for determining objective truth about the physical world.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I see myself, first and foremost, as an educator. I have gained valuable experience in providing interpersonal support to students in introductory and upper-level classes. My teaching philosophy reflects my interest in collaborative learning, where active participation is expected and encouraged. I am an ardent proponent of providing feedback that invites reflective and critical thinking, which in turn enhances student learning.
